LCS Celebrates Homecoming Spirit Week

The football field lights were on, the crown was placed, the school dance was held, but homecoming week didn’t come to an end, it became a new memory. From October 6th through the 10th, students at Leigh Community Schools celebrated homecoming week.
Throughout the week, different dress up days occurred where every student in the elementary and high school could participate. New traditions were also made downtown shedding school spirit.
On Monday, many students were not in attendance at school due to FFA livestock judging and JAG festivities, but that didn’t stop school spirit. The first interactive dress up day was Disney themed where elementary and high school students participated.
Painting the town in Patriot pride, 7th through 12th grade painted windows on Main Street Tuesday morning, starting a new tradition. Many windows featured paintings supporting the Patriots and the upcoming football game versus Newman Grove St. Edward.
Students could be seen wearing Gothic or Preppy outfits on Tuesday. Alongside dressing up, students also participated in “Anything But a Backpack Day” where they brought any object and used it to carry their supplies. Caleb Settje, a sophomore, brought a pedal tractor with a wagon and Cade Hoesly, a sophomore, brought a pedal tractor combine. The winner for Gothic was Emery Malena dressing as the character Wednesday.
Continuing the week, on Wednesday, Leigh Community Schools was filled with musicians and movie characters. Seniors Karly Wendt and Neveah Zulkoski dressed up as rappers. The two seniors both won as well as Mariah Kasik, a 7th grader, who dressed up as Daphne from Scooby Doo.
Thursday every high school and elementary class participated in Class Unity Day. 7th grade was dads and grandpas. 8th grade dressed as sports players, and the freshmen dressed up as history teacher Jeff Bachman. Turning a game into reality, the sophomores dressed as characters from Clash Royale. The juniors put bouncy balls on their heads as “nonchalant dread heads” from TikTok and the seniors won by hosting a wedding and including every member of their class as part of it.
On Thursday a pep rally was also held on Main Street, creating an ambiance of pride for Leigh and the Patriots. The Leigh Marching Band kicked off the rally by marching in with the entire elementary and high school following behind. The homecoming candidates played games hosted by the junior class. The dance team, cheerleaders, and band also hyped up the crowd during different segments of the pep rally.
Fueling Patriot pride, Friday's theme was Patriot. School hallways and classrooms were filled with red, white, and blue. Juniors Reese Bruhn and Rebecca Hastreiter dressed up as founding fathers wining best dressed. Joined by Clarkson, a pep rally was hosted at Leigh with all Clarkson and Leigh students in attendance.
Even though the week was almost over, Homecoming week didn’t end after Friday's school day. Returning a town tradition, a parade was held before the football game with the alumni band joining the Leigh band on a trailer. Clarkson and Leigh elementary students and band members also attended the spirit parade riding a float down to the football field for face painting and funnel cakes!
The Leigh alumni band joined the LHS band to play before the game and at halftime. Also before, during, and after the game, the Patriot Booster Club hosted a tailgate in the Fairgrounds building for all Patriot fans in honor of Homecoming and the 1984 Leigh Football team that won a state title. The 1984 team was also honored at halftime.
After the game, coronation was held on the field with Luke Eisenmann and Ava Kasik crowned Leigh King and Queen and Levi Gall and Kendall Schneider crowned for Clarkson.
Coming to a close, Saturday night the homecoming dance was held in Clarkson with 9th through 12th graders in attendance.
Senior Karly Wendt said, “This week is full of all different kinds of school spirit and pride. Homecoming is easily one of my favorite weeks of the year. Yes, it gets stressful at times and seems to go by fast, but it is all worth it in the end when you get to look back at all of the memories.”
“This week has been really fun. I enjoyed decorating windows on Main Street and seeing what the other classes had designed. I'm excited to see what the Juniors have planned for the pep rally, and it should be very fun,” said senior Brayden Loseke.
Homecoming week was a great success for fall sports and student participation. With new traditions created and memories made, the halls, classrooms, and even the town burst with Patriot pride!
