Leigh Student Writers Earn Achievements!

Averi Clausen Advances to State Patriot

It was another very successful year for the Leigh writers in the Patriot Pen and Voice of Democracy writing competition at the district competition! A few grades in Leigh’s elementary, junior high, and high school were given the opportunity to write essays that were prompted with a question about America and their thoughts on the topic.

The Patriot’s Pen contest is an essay contest for students in grades 6-8.  Averi Clausen was one of the two local Leigh entries that were chosen to move on to the district competition, and Averi won the district!  Her essay will now advance to the state Patriot’s Pen essay competition in Lincoln in April!

When asked about this accomplishment, Averi Clausen, an eighth grader at Leigh, said, “I entered the Patriot's pen competition in my 8th grade English class. We had to write about what America's democracy means to us. I tried my best to tell the world what American democracy means to me, even though I thought it was a little hard to find a way to get my point across on such a broad topic when I am only an 8th grader, but it ended up going well!”

The high school students compete in the Voice of Democracy speaking contest where they write and deliver a 3-5 minute speech.  Wyatt Langhorst was one of two students whose speech was chosen to compete at districts, and he received third place at districts!

Both Averi and Wyatt received another cash prize for their district success.

Wyatt Langhorst, a sophomore at Leigh High School, said, “This was a great opportunity for me, and I am excited that I was able to place third in the district competition. I am also happy to have been in the contest and be able to honor all of our veterans.”

This was an honor for students in Leigh High School to showcase their writing abilities related to veterans and our country in general, and we wish Averi the best at the state competition!
