Patriot GBB Loses Before Sub-Districts
On February 10th and February 12th, the Patriot girls’ basketball team first traveled to Fort Calhoun to play the Pioneers and then stayed home to play the Stanton Mustangs.
Coming into the games on the 10th, the girls knew that the Pioneers would be a strong, physical team. The Patriots had never played the Pioneers before, so the girls were excited to get to play them.
The JV girls started the marathon off. The girls trailed at halftime by 10, but soon were able to tie the game at 28-28. The girls played filled with energy and momentum coming into the last few minutes of game time. Within the last three minutes, the girls couldn’t stick with the Pioneers, as they fell 29-35.
Next came the varsity girls. The team was filled with excitement to get a chance to play the Pioneers. The game started off on a very high note. The girls led the game the whole 1st quarter where lots of the girls’ shots were falling and they were able to get stops on every defensive possession. The girls slowed down a little in the second quarter as they now trailed by 4. Going into halftime the game was 22-26. After halftime, the girls just couldn’t keep up with the aggressiveness Fort Calhoun came out with as they started to trail by more. The Patriots lost the game 39-61.
“Coming into the game, we knew that we had to play physical and have the aggressive mindset. During the first half we stuck with them. Our defense was hard to beat and our shots were falling. After halftime, we came out slow and this is where they started to pull away. We still played physically, but we just turned it over too many times in their press. This game only made us better!” said junior Reese Wietfeld after the game against the Pioneers.
On Thursday the girls stayed home to play the Stanton Mustangs. Tonight was senior night and parents’ night, so the Lady Pats wanted to play a very good game.
Starting off on a high note, the JV girls won 20-19 in overtime. Although they only played two quarters, this was a very strong place for the JV team to end their season. After losing in the first quarter, the girls knew that they needed to play the best yet to come back. The Patriots fought hard and played well as a team to help them tie the game to go into overtime. They ended up scoring fast and pulling off with a win! They ended the season 7-13.
The varsity girls were fired up at the start of the game. After the first quarter, it was 11-8 with the Patriots up. The girls came back out after the quarter ready for more, but started slowing down before going into halftime with the game at 15-17. The Mustangs were then able to just push forward as we couldn’t score around the rim. The Patriots were able to learn a lot from this game to take forward with them going into subdistricts. 27-46 was the final score.
Junior Vylet Hollatz said, “We came out firing against Stanton and were up at the end of the first quarter. This led us to play an aggressive second quarter, trailing at halftime by 2. Coming out after halftime, we struggled a little, playing slow on the offensive and defensive side. This is where the game started to get away from us, but there are many things to take away from this game going into subdistricts!”
The girls’ record is now 7-16 after these games.
