Big Week for Patriot Volleyball!

Pats Face Off Against Lincoln Lutheran in Rematch of Last Year’s State Finals

By: Baylee Settje, senior LHS journalism staff writer on October 04, 2024

The Clarkson-Leigh Patriot Volleyball team faced off against two teams during Homecoming Week, Schuyler on Tuesday, September 24, and Lincoln Lutheran on Thursday, September 26th.

On Tuesday, September 24th, the Patriots’ Volleyball team played Schuyler in their own gym. The Warriors turned out to be no match for the Patriots, as the C-team, JV, and Varsity all came out with wins. The C-team started off the night strong with a win, finishing them off in three sets. Then the JV team followed in the same direction and defeated Schuyler in just two sets.

Then to end the night, the Patriots Varsity team swept Schuyler, leaving their record as 15-0. The Varsity team took all three sets, 25-8, 25-5, and 25-2. In this game Ava Kasik led the team with 8 kills with Vylet Hollatz contributing 6 serving aces.

Head Coach Rebecca Schneider stated, “We did a lot of good things when playing Schuyler!  We served received well, which in return we were able to attack and stay aggressive!

The Patriots then took a trip down to Lincoln to face off against the Lincoln Lutheran Warriors. This was a state championship rematch game, as the Patriots were seeking revenge from last year's loss at the state championship game. This would also be the first time the Patriots have played Lincoln Lutheran in the regular season, as they had just put them into their schedule this year.

The JV’s started off the night, but it didn’t end the way they wanted it to, losing in two sets. The two sets were extremely close, but the JV team couldn’t pull out the win.

Next up, was the Varsity match. The Patriots came out strong in the first set, pulling away with a fast lead, but then one by one, Lincoln Lutheran caught up.

The score kept going back and forth between the two teams, leaving the first set with a solid score of 30-32. This set did not go in favor of the Patriots, but they challenged the Warriors until the very end.

The second set was also very competitive, but the Patriots couldn’t pull out this set either, leaving the ending score as 21-25. The Patriots continued to battle throughout the third set, but point-by-point the Warriors pulled away the win from the Patriots, 14-25.

Even though the Patriots had their first loss of the season, they improved in all aspects and will continue to succeed as they get further into the season. This loss left the Patriots record to 15-1.

Head Coach Rebecca Schneider also had a few thoughts about the Lincoln Lutheran match-up, “The LL match was a highly anticipated match!  I thought we prepared really well for them and actually executed our game plan to a T!  Unfortunately, we were not able to close out that first set which was a little defeating, however, we came out in the second and third sets, and continued to battle!  Even though we lost that match, we improved all the way around!  We did a lot of good things so we look to learn from this loss and move on to the next match!”

When junior Ava Kasik, was asked about how the week went she responded with, “We came off of the Schuyler game with a lot of confidence, but for Lincoln Lutheran we knew we would have to come out with double the amount of confidence and energy. We challenged Lincoln Lutheran the first set and took them to 32. They had powerful hitters, and I feel our defense responded really well. Although we weren't able to get a set from them, it strengthened our mental toughness.”
