GBB Defeats the Trojans

On Saturday, January 25, The Clarkson Leigh girls’ JV and varsity basketball team played the Wakefield Trojans. This game was hosted at home in Clarkson and was a pretty interesting game with the Patriots coming out on top, and the score ending 58-39. All the girls worked together and never let up the whole game to accomplish this win. The top two players for this game were Brynn Settje and Baylee Settje, who put up 21 and 11 points respectively.

Baylee stated, “Against Wakefield we started off really slow and weren't playing to the best of our ability. We switched gears heading into the second half and started to play as a team hitting down crucial shots and causing Wakefield to turn the ball over.”

Head Coach Ms. Rebecca Hiatt said, “Against Wakefield, we came out a little flat, but in the second half we found our energy on the defensive end and were able to translate it to offensive success.”

Later in the week on January 28, the girls matched up with Wisner-Pilger. This game was a nail-biter with the score being close the whole game. But unfortunately in the end the Patriots ended up with the loss, with the score ending 39-42. Fortunately, the girls will have another chance to get their win over the Wisner-Pilger team, because on January 31 they will play them again in the first round of Conference.

“It was a very close game against Wisner-Pilger the whole time, but we came up just a few points short of sealing the win,” Baylee said. “As a team, we struggled to find momentum and go on a run. We ultimately gave up too many offensive rebounds and open shots that may have cost us the game. We have a chance to play them again on Friday for the first round of the conference tournament, so now we have more motivation to get the win!”

Coach Hiatt stated, “On Tuesday against Wisner-Pilger, we were able to turn them over and came out in the first quarter with good energy. Although the game did not go the way we wanted it to, we were able to find success throughout the game attacking and moving the basketball. We need to improve on offensive rebounding and limit fouls.”
