Boys Defeat Schuyler in Holiday Tourney

On Saturday, December 28th, the Clarkson-Leigh basketball teams headed to Lakeview for the holiday basketball tournament, where they ended up finishing third and picking up their second win of the season.

This was the first year the Patriots were a part of this tournament, hosted by the Columbus Chamber of Commerce.  The tournament included Clarkson-Leigh, Columbus Lakeview, Columbus Scotus, and Schuyler.

To kick off the tournament for the boys, the Patriots played Scotus. Ending the first quarter, the boys were only down by 7. Unfortunately, the boys could not stop the Shamrocks from scoring and were trailing by 15 at the end of the half.

Coming out of halftime, the boys knew they needed to work a little harder to catch up to try to get ahead, but just didn’t fight hard enough. By the end of the third quarter the boys were down by 23. Although the players worked their hardest to put some shots up, the shots would not fall and the Shamrocks took the win.

The final score of the game was 33-67 with the Scotus Shamrocks on top. Junior Kyle McMullin led the team with 10 points and 4 rebounds, and Grant Hanel added 8 points.

After a disappointing loss on Saturday, the Patriots head back to Lakeview on Monday to end the holiday tournament and play the Schuyler Warriors.

With an amazing first half from the Pats, the first-half score was 33-11.

At the end of the third quarter, both teams had scored 8 points. To end the game, the Patriots held the Warriors to 9 points and came out on top with a score of 55-28.

Wyatt Crosley led the team with 16 points and 5 rebounds along with an added on 9 points from Tucker Matthies.

Head coach Jeff Bachman said, “I was happy how we came out of the break. We scored well and battled a couple of tough teams. We need to keep building and keep getting better as we move into the second half of the year.”

Sophomore Blake Loseke said, “Against Scotus, we really battled, but we could tell that we were not ready for a team like Scotus after break. Against Schuyler, we had a lot better energy from the start. This led to a lot better defense and offense, giving us the win.”
