Patriot Girls Kick Off Season 1-1

On December 6-7, the Patriot girls began their basketball season by playing the Humphrey-Lindsay Academy Bulldogs and the Madison Dragons. Coming off of their Wynot jamboree game the Monday before, they travelled out to Humphrey to battle the Bulldogs.

After a victory for the JV girls, the varsity took the floor and saw some quick action—especially with this year’s addition of the statewide 35-second shot clock—but just came short of winning. After a slower start for Clarkson-Leigh, the teams went neck and neck until the final quarter when the Patriots fell behind by a few points to lose 35-37.

Bouncing back the next day with a home court victory, the Patriot girls took it to the Madison Dragons 61-30, which was Coach Rebecca Hiatt’s first career win as the new head coach of Clarkson-Leigh’s girls’ basketball.

“Against Humphrey-Lindsay, we came out and did not have the best offensive first quarter. Once we settled in, we were able to attack the hoop and then we got good looks. The team did a great job of rebounding and moving the basketball,” stated Coach Hiatt, “Against Madison, we came in with an aggressive mindset and we hit shots. It was great to see girls step up and play well. We had 11 different scorers and played good defense holding Madison to 30 points.”

Senior Brynn Settje said, “Going into the Humphrey game, we knew it was going to be a hard game. We all tried our hardest and our shots unfortunately weren’t the best that night. Going into Madison, we knew that we just had to play our game and if we did, we would have a lot of fun. It was a great game to have after playing Humphrey and we were able to make a couple of more shots that night.”
