Cyclones Pick Up First Win

The Cyclone softball team played two back-to-back games this week in Albion against Boone Central on Monday, August, 26th, and in Pierce on Tuesday August, 29 in Leigh.  Fortunately, the girls found their first victory of the season in the second game against the Bluejays.

On Monday, they battled Boone Central, who had lost in their first game of the season and entered the match 0-1.

The JV team won by 13-2. The varsity ended up losing to the Cardinals 2-12.

On August 29, the Cyclones’ luck reversed when they faced Pierce in Leigh.

The Cyclones took an early lead, but the Bluejays battled back and outpaced the Cyclones.   But the back-and-forth game continued when the Cyclones caught up in the final inning and won on a walk-off hit by freshman Matelyn Rayback with the bases loaded.

Head coach Drew Machmueller said, “For Albion we struggled to get our bats going offensively and made a couple mistakes that hurt us on the defensive side. We were looking forward to bouncing back against Pierce at home. For Pierce the girls did a really nice job getting the bat on the ball and putting pressure on Pierce’s Defense. I was really happy with how well they managed the ups and downs of the game and were able to find a way to win in the end.”

Junior Lexis Gleason said, “Although we lost, both teams played hard against Boone Central. I am very proud of the girls who fought continuously throughout the entire game. Tuesday it was a well-deserved victory for all the girls on the field. Our coaches prepared us well, and we brought everything out for this win. We had some great hits and some even better plays.”

The Cyclones’ game scheduled for Thursday, August 29, was cancelled due to weather.  The Cyclones’ record is currently 1-2.
