Patriot Golf Finishes Season at Oakland

After a long and successful season of learning and improving, the girls’ golf team had their final golf tournament of the year for district competition on Tuesday, October 6, at the Oakland Golf Club.
Only three girls were able to compete for Clarkson-Leigh at districts. Since teams have to have 5 members to compete in the team standings, the Patriots were not able to earn a team score or qualify as a team for State. But they still competed as individuals.
Ms. Jayden Porkorney, one of the girls’ golf coaches, said, “We knew that going into districts, it was going to be tough because the teams in our district were tough. Our girls still kept their heads up and did their best, just like they have all season! Unfortunately, no one was able to qualify for state, but next year, we are hoping to have a few more girls out so we can field a team and increase these chances.
Cortlynn Cadwallader from Leigh and Hazel Mundt and Ashly Guillen from Clarkson all competed at the meet. Guillen shot the low score for the team after 18 holes with a 114, while Cadwallader finished with a 133, and Mundt finished with a 144.
Other teams in the district included Archbishop Bergan, Arlington, Boone Central, Cedar Bluffs, Clarkson-Leigh, Columbus Scotus, Fullerton, Oakland-Craig, Omaha Brownell Talbot, Omaha Concordia, Omaha Roncalli Catholic, Shelby-Rising City, and St Paul.
Abbigail Broderson of Boone Central shot the low score of the day with a 77. The top 10 overall scores qualified for state individually, and the top two teams also qualify their entire teams for State. Boone Central and Omaha Brownell Talbot were the top two teams who qualified.
“This was a very exciting season!” Cadwallader said. “It seemed like it went by so fast. We all gained a lot of knowledge and our scores improved as the season went on. For being in such a tough district, we all did our best.”
Coach Pokorney said, “During that first practice, Coach Meyer and I were pretty nervous about how the season was going to turn out. We set goals for the girls and 3 of the 5 girls met or exceeded this goal, so they were able to earn a free lunch on Coach Meyer. After they smashed our goals, we had high hopes for the girls and knew that everyone was improving.”
