Large Livestock Judging Competition Held in Leigh!
Leigh FFA Wins Top Individual Honors
On October 9th the Leigh FFA Chapter hosted their first ever livestock judging competition at the Colfax County fairgrounds. The whole state was invited and 16 different schools attended!
These schools include Wood River, Winside, Shelby-Rising City, Schuyler, Newman Grove, Logan-View, Lakeview, Leigh, Howells-Dodge, Humphrey, David City, Central, Clarkson, Centennial, Boone Central, Ashland-Greenwood, and Aquinas. All of the Leigh junior high and high school FFA members either competed or helped run the event with a total of 26 students competing from Leigh.
Hannah Martensen, a sophomore said, “For the first time ever, the chapter hosted a livestock judging competition for chapters across the state. I thought for the first time, the event was well organized and a good fundraiser for our upcoming trip to nationals. Hosting this competition was a good practice for members who have not participated in judging before and it was a nice way to practice before districts.
“As a chapter, Leigh competed extraordinarily well for how much practice we had beforehand. Having two of our members place first and our teams placing, it gave Leigh as a chapter an exceptional start to upcoming competitions for the year!"
The Leigh chapter had the top individual finisher in both the senior and junior divisions! Kammy Held placed first in senior division, and Carmen Malena placed 1st in junior division! Blair Wietfeld was the top Leigh finisher in the junior high division, finishing 8th overall.
As a team, the Leigh Senior Team of Kammy Held, Carter Brabec, Blake Loseke, and Luke Eisenmann placed third overall. The Leigh junior high team placed 2nd overall.
The contest was a huge success with almost 300 kids total attending,” sophomore Cody Jedlicka said. “It was fun! I got to see all my friends too.”
