Student Opinion: “Rainbow Babies” are Miracles of Hope

Some people may ask what a “Rainbow Baby” is or why people sometimes call their baby a rainbow baby. A rainbow baby is a baby that is born after losing a baby from having a miscarriage, infant loss, or stillborn baby.

A rainbow baby is a very special thing in my heart because I have two twin sisters that are rainbow babies. I was an only child for the first six years of my life. I always dreamed of having a little baby brother or sister. My parents, Tara and Lance Urban, always told me that they were trying to have a baby, but they weren’t able to.

I was very young when they told me this, so I didn’t know what this meant, but I did know that hopefully one day I would be able to have a sister or brother. Then after six years of trying to have a baby, my mom and dad turned to fertility treatments. Soon after I turned seven, my mom and dad told me that they were pregnant with not one, but two babies. Imagine my excitement! I couldn’t wait until they were born. I remember going to ultrasounds with them and seeing my soon-to-be siblings in my mom’s stomach.

On Saturday December 3, 2016, my twin sisters were born. I was so excited to meet them and couldn’t wait to spend the rest of my life with them. As I have gotten older and now know more about rainbow babies and understand more about infertility, I now know how special I am to have my twin sisters, Thea and Laurel. They are now eight, and I am fifteen. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for both me and them.
