Student Opinion Column: A New Volleyball Chapter
Only about 7% of high school athletes continue their athletic career at the collegiate level. Isn’t that crazy? I didn’t realize how low that percentage really is, and this shows me that playing sports in college is something that not many people get to experience, but I believe that it is very beneficial because athletes still get to play the sport they love, as well as stay in shape throughout college.
Being able to play any sport at the next level after high school is very exciting, and I am ecstatic that I have the opportunity to do just that by continuing my volleyball career at Northeast! I know that this will be great experience for me, and I honestly can say that I can’t see myself doing anything else next year!
I am very thankful for this opportunity, and I can’t wait for next fall to play with an almost completely new team. The reason I say ‘almost’ is because not only do I have the opportunity to play volleyball at the next level, but I also am able to play with one of my best friends, Baylee Settje. We get to go on this journey together, and I think that will make the experience that much more enjoyable!
College sports are also a great way to make new friends who could potentially be your lifelong friends. Since you are part of a team, you are practically with these people all the time, meaning that you will be able to find people who you connect with. You are also able to bond with them over the fact that you both decided to play volleyball, which would be a shared experience you would have.
Overall, college sports, in general, can give you opportunity to do what you love, find new friends (or experience it with an existing one), and provide a sense of belonging. I have had amazing experiences playing volleyball in high school, and I am greatly looking forward to continuing to make amazing memories in college next year playing the sport I love.
