“Student of the Month” Winners Announced

Every month Leigh High School announces three students that have noticeably gone above and beyond in academics, extracurricular activities, or character. These are the ‘Students of the Month’. Our most recent Students of the Month were Wyatt Langhorst, Brianne Kuhr, and Riley Van Dyke.

Our first winner is sophomore Wyatt Langhorst.

He is the son of Jill Langhorst. Wyatt is involved in football, wrestling, golf, One-Act play, band, and journalism. Wyatt says his favorite class is shop with Mr. Bazata, but History is pretty cool, too. For hobbies, he enjoys kayaking, video games, and cooking.

As for future plans, Wyatt isn’t exactly sure what he wants to do quite yet, but he thinks he maybe wants to do something in engineering. This is Wyatt’s first time winning this award.

He says, “It’s nice to win, considering so many deserving candidates, but being recognized for any achievement feels good.”

Wyatt’s teachers said that he is kind, helpful, and has a good attitude. He tries very hard in everything he does, and works very hard at all the tasks that are asked of him without complaining. He also gets really involved and puts forth great effort in all his extracurriculars.

Our next winner is senior Brianne Kuhr. She is the daughter of Russ and Beth Kuhr. She is the granddaughter of Dennis and Norene Kuhr, and Urban and Alice Imholte.

Some extracurricular activities that Brianne is involved in are track and field, golf, journalism, yearbook, play production, speech, FFA, quiz bowl, band, national honor society, Youth Advisory Committee, and FCCLA.

Brianne’s favorite classes in school are science and band. Her favorite hobbies outside of school are ice fishing, hunting, playing cards, hanging out with friends, and painting. Right now, Brianne is planning to attend Wayne State College and major in pre-pharmacy; she will be at Wayne State College for three years. Then she will have to go on to medical school for four years to become a pharmacist.

Brianne isn’t a new face when it comes to this award, as it’s her impressive fourth time winning it. Brianne said that, “I feel honored to win this award, and it makes me happy to know that my teachers notice that I am trying my best in school.”

Brianne’s teachers really think highly of her diligence. They said that she works so hard in everything she does, values, academics, and is just an amazing kid. She is a great leader in the senior class and truly fun to have in class.

And last but not least, our third winner of ‘Student of the Month’ is senior Riley Van Dyke. His parents are Casey and Gina Van Dyke. He is the grandson of Dave and Judy Olmer, and Glen and Amy Van Dyke.

Riley plays an important role on the Patriots Stream Team and was a giant part in the One-Act crew this year. He says his favorite class is Industrial Tech class with creating metal signs. Some of his favorite hobbies outside of school include gaming and origami.

Riley’s teachers say he is just a friendly person who is fun to talk to, and has really taken steps to get out of his comfort zone these past few years.  He worked as an aide for Mrs. Maliha this year and was talked into co-teaching elementary technology class to Kindergarten through third graders. It was out of his comfort zone, but he stepped up to share tech topics with younger students. He has also taken on a leadership role on the One-Act team and stream team this year.  He has never missed a stream event, which allows LCS patrons to view all the games on the Internet if they aren’t able to attend in person.  He is very organized and plans ahead to make this happen.

Riley plans on going to Northeast Community College for Information Technology and Cybersecurity.

This is Riley’s second time winning this award and he says, “I have been working really hard to keep my grades high and always turning my homework in on time. I am glad that it is paying off."

Congratulations to these outstanding students for setting such high standards for themselves and winning Student of the Month.
