Leigh One-Act Play Gives Final Performance

Escaping the frigid weather, the Leigh One Act team and community entered ancient Rome at their annual Deserts and Drama performance on November 30, 2025, before their District performance on December 3rd in Leigh.

This year, the Leigh One Act play is both a comedy set in ancient Rome. The Broadway classic is named “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” In total, the One-Act team consists of 62 cast and crew members.

The desserts and hot cocoa began at 6:30 pm on Sunday night after the downtown tree lighting. The show began at 7!

Coach Megan Hillen said, ““Our Drama and Desserts performance was a success, and sharing our work with families and community members made the evening especially meaningful. We appreciate their support and enthusiasm, and carry that into our district performance."

Just a few days later, on Wednesday, December 4, Leigh competed in a tough D1-4 District competition. Schools in attendance were Archangels Catholic, Burwell, Loup City, Riverside, Central Valley, and Anselmo-Merna.

Leaving everything on stage for the last time, Leigh’s season ended coming up with third place.

Despite the judge ranking not going Leigh’s way, Leigh had several outstanding actor recognition awards, more than any other school. These went to Luke Eisenmann, Sydney Messerlie, Liz Hoffman, Wyatt Langhorst, Reese Wietfeld, Carmen Malena, Trevor Hoffman, Tyce Larson, and Wyatt Eisenmann.

Senior Sydney Messerlie said, “Despite everything and the final outcome, I thought we tried our hardest and gave it our all. The disappointing part of performing arts is all based off the judges’ opinions. They don’t see the behind the scenes and the tears and sweat put into it. As a senior that loves One-Act, I worked with amazing people over the years, but not as amazing as this group. If I could do it all over again, despite the outcome, I would.”

“We had a tough district, with two other top schools from the Goldenrod Conference. I was really sad with how the results ended up, but I was more than pleased with how our kids performed,’ said director Justine Fischer, ‘I thought it was our best performance to date, and I thought we put on a phenomenal show that was definitely state-worthy. Thank you so much to all the seniors for their leadership and for all the cast and crew for working so hard.

Mrs. Fischer continued, “I want to give a special recognition to Mrs. Held in her last performance as a director.  She has been with the program for a long time, and she will be so missed next year!”

Congratulations on a successful season, Leigh One Act Team!
