Historian Randy Dunn Presents for Leigh Elementary Students

On September 25th, the elementary students of Leigh Community Schools were happy to get out of the classroom and receive a unique opportunity to learn some history with Randy Dunn from Pender, Nebraska. He came and showed off some artifacts from the 1800s, including farming equipment and other equipment an early homesteader may have used.

Randy Dunn also offered hands-on learning experiences for the kids with a short presentation for the younger students and a longer, more in-depth presentation to the older kids.

Kim Loseke, the 3rd grade teacher at Leigh Community Schools said, “The third graders enjoyed feeling the animal furs and looking at the artifacts.” Additionally, she said, “They enjoyed making music with the drum and animal horns.”

Brianne Wietfield, the 5th grade teacher at Leigh, said that the history presentation, “Was like stepping back in time—each artifact told a story, painting vivid pictures of the past. The students were captivated, as the items and stories brought history to life in a way no textbook ever could. We had a fantastic experience! It’s great to see our students intrigued and engaged with the stories.”

The students really enjoyed the event. Thanks to Randy Dunn for providing this unique learning opportunity.
